IN 1793 about a dozen villagers in the German town of Bad Wildbad took ill after eating blood sausages, a local pork staple prepared from raw meat, fat and blood. Six died; the cause was unknown. origins of the illness. After five years of work—in the field and laboratory—he concluded that it was caused by a biological toxin in pork fat that blocked nerve signaling.
