파펼리즘 파펼리스트는 주로 긍정적 의미로 쓰인다

우리 공동체에서 파펼리즘^populism이라는 단어는 부정적으로 쓰인다.

1. (정치) 일반 대중의 인기에 영합하는 정치 형태. 대중을 동원하여 권력을 유지하는 정치 체제로 대중주의라고도 하며 엘리트주의와 상대되는 개념이다.

파펼리즘은 표준국어대사전에는 없다. 흔히 번역할 때에는 ‘인기영합주의’라고 한다.

바이든과 의회의 자칭 파펼리스트들이 자신들은 보통 사람들을 대변한다고 주장한다는 내용의 기사다. 문맥에 따르면 여기에서 파펼리스트들은 긍정적인 의미다. 나쁜 의미라면 자신들 스스로 그렇게 부를 리 없기 때문이다. 우리나라에서 쓰이는 의미와 다르다.

1. (philosophy) A political doctrine or philosophy that proposes that the rights and powers of ordinary people are exploited by a privileged elite, and supports their struggle to overcome this.
2. (derogatory) The practice of appealing to the interests of the common people.

경멸적으로 인기영합주의라는 뜻을 갖기도 하지만 그에 앞서 보통 사람들의 권익을 대변한다는 의미가 있다. 따라서 파펼리즘을 인기영합주의로 이해하는 건 대체로 틀리다.
