to 부정사의 해석 – 목적 또는 결과

우리나라에선 유명하지 않은 소설가 조지 무어의 유명한 여행 예찬이다. 무언가를 찾아 길을 떠나지만 결국 집으로 돌아와 그것을 찾게 된다는 말이다. 그것을 찾기 위해 집으로 돌아온다고 이해해도 문법적으로 틀린 건 아니지만 문맥에는 맞지 않는다.

A to-infinitive can be used to express result; however, this use is more common in literary styles:

to 부정사가 결과를 의미하기도 하지만 이는 주로 문학적인 표현에서 그렇다는 말이다. 위의 무어 글을 보면 그런 거 같다. 이를 반대로 해석하면 일상의 대화에서는 문제가 될 수도 있다는 뜻이다. 이런 혼란을 줄이기 위해 결과를 뜻하는 to 부정사는 주로 앞에 only를 붙인다.

Only + to-infinitive can express a disappointing result of an action:
I went back to the shop only to find that it had closed for good.

그 가게에 다시 가 봤는데 아예 문을 닫았더라는 얘기다. for good은 ‘영원히’라는 뜻이다.

반대로 to 부정사 앞에 in order나 so as가 있으면 이는 목적을 뜻하며 결과로 이해할 여지는 없다.
