kettle 뜻 – 사람들을 구석으로 몰아 빠져나가지 못하게 하다

미국의 경찰들이 흑인 용의자 조지 플로이드를 체포하면서 목을 눌러 죽여서 많은 사람들이 경찰을 비난하며 시위를 벌였다. 이때 경찰들은 떼를 지어 시위대를 에워싼 뒤 꼼짝달싹하지 못하게 한 뒤 몇 시간을 그 상태로 빠져나가지도 못하게 했다. 이 행위 자체가 불법은 아니지만 그 정도가 지나쳐서 시위대로부터 공공의 안녕을 지킨다는 목적을 넘어서면 당연히 불법행위가 된다.

이러한 경찰들의 행위를 동사로 kettle이라 하는데 근래에 새로 만들어진 말이다. kettle은 명사로 주전자를 뜻하며 동사 kettle과는 완전하게 다른 뜻으로 쓰인다. 뉴 욕 시는 케틀 피해자들에게 보상하기로 합의했다.
