주격 관계대명사 who의 생략

아래의 기사는 그냥 대충 봐도 무슨 뜻인지 알 수 있지만 문법적으로 분석을 하려면 쉽지 않다.

미국의 텍사스 주에서 어떤 또라이가 사람들을 총으로 마구 쏴 죽였는데 수사 당국의 발표에 따르면 이 사람은 군바리 노릇을 하다 쫓겨났었다는 얘기다. 당장 눈에 거슬리는 건 ‘said was’라는 부분인데 be 아닌 일반동사 둘이 연달아 나오는 건 문법적으로 허용되지 않기 때문이다. 위의 문장은 아래와 같이 바꾸는 게 좋다.

-> The gunman, authorities said, was responsible for the deaths of eight people in Allen, Texas …
-> authorities said the gunman was responsible for the deaths of eight people in Allen, Texas …

즉 said와 was 사이에는 아무 관계가 없다. 그런데 이렇게 봐도 뭔가 개운치 않다. 저 뒤에 ‘, was terminated …’라는 술부가 또 있기 때문이다. 원래는 아래의 문장이다.

authorities said that the gunman who was responsible for the deaths of eight people in Allen, Texas, was terminated by the Army for mental health reasons three months after he enlisted in 2008, and recent social media postings that officials are examining show links to white supremacist views.

gunman을 주어로 하는 동사는 was terminated이고 was responsible은 관계대명사 절이다. 문제는 주격 관계대명사인 who가 생략되었다는 거다. 목적격 관계대명사는 흔히 생략되지만 주격 관계대명사는 원칙적으로 생략되지 않는다. 그런데 위 문장에서는 왜 생략되었을까?

주격의 관계대명사는 생략하지 않는 것이 원칙인데 There is … 등의 뒤에서는 생략되기도 함.

위 설명에서 ‘등’이라는 표현에 주의하는 게 좋다. the authority said was responsible for는 관용적으로 쓰이는 표현으로 주격 관계대명사 who가 대부분의 경우 생략된다.
