영어의 형용사가 명사로 쓰이는 경우 – 명사화 nominalization

‘the rich’처럼 형용사가 the와 함께 쓰일 수 있다는 건 학교에서 충분히 배운다. 하지만 아래와 같은 문장은 낯설다.

뜻은 알겠는데 문법적으로 어떻게 이해해야 할지 난감하다. 그냥 형용사도 명사처럼 쓰일 수 있다고 알면 된다. 이걸 명사화^{nominalization}라 한다.

그런데 중요한 건 이렇게 명사화된 때에는 그 뜻이 달라진다는 거다. 위 기사에서는 ‘대단한 사람들’과 ‘권력을 가진 사람들’이라는 뜻으로 쓰였다. 그 의미는 문맥에 따라 이해해야 하며 이 경우 복수로 취급해야 하는 것도 유의하는 게 좋다.
