compensation의 뜻 – 줘야 할 돈

내이버 영어사전들에서 compensate를 찾아보면 ‘보상하다’라고 한글로만 나와 있다. 표준국어대사전에서 ‘보상’을 찾아보면 補償과 報償 두 개가 나오는데 앞의 것은 ‘남에게 끼친 손해를 갚는 것’이고 뒤의 것은 ‘남에게 진 빚 또는 받은 물건을 갚는 것’이라 나와 있다. 서로 분명하게 다른 뜻들인데 영어의 compensate는 이들 모두의 뜻을 가지고 있다.

employee compensation은 직역하면 ‘피용자에 대한 보상’인데 산업재해보상 같은 걸 떠올리게 한다. 아니다. employee compensation은 고용자가 피용자의 노동에 대해 피용자에게 주는 대부분의 것들을 뜻한다. 여기에는 우선 임금이 당연히 포함되며 상여금과 각종 혜택들도 들어간다. 배상이 아니라 reward다. 따라서 넓게는 compensation이 ‘임금’이라는 뜻으로도 쓰일 수 있다.
