심화되는 미국 정치의 지역적 양극화

정치가 지역적으로 갈수록 심하게 양극화되고 있다며 그 원인을 다룬 칼럼이다. 제목은 What Drives Political Polarization이다.

우선 첫 번째 이유는 경제적 수준이 양극화되고 있다는 거다. 이는 지역적 산업의 특성 말고도 교육 받는 정도와도 관계가 있다는 분석이다.

둘째는 민감한 정책적 주제들이 정책의 수혜자들에게 입체적으로 수용되지 못하고 국가적으로 지나치게 일반화되고 있다는 주장이다. 지방에 사는 사람들은 자신들의 생활 방식이나 신념과 동떨어진 정책과 이념들을 도시 지역에서 많은 교육을 받고 잘 사는 사람들이 지들 편리한 대로 일방적으로 몰아 부친다고 받아들일 수 있다.

우리 공동체에서도 지역적인 정치 양극화는 심하다. 하지만 우리의 경우에는 도시와 지방으로 나뉘는 게 아니라 도시는 도시대로 지방은 지방대로 둘로 나뉜다. 따라서 지역적 양극화는 그 경우가 미국과 우리의 그것이 서로 다르며 당연히 그 분석도 맞지 않는다.
