‘꼬다’와 ‘풀다’라는 상반된 뜻들을 갖는 ravel과 unravel

동사 unravel은 상반된 ‘풀다’와 ‘혼란스럽게 하다’라는 두 개의 뜻들을 가진 애매한 단어다.

unravel은 동사 ravel에 부정을 뜻하는 접두사 un이 붙은 거다. 근데 ravel 역시 ‘꼬이게 하다’와 ‘풀다’라는 서로 반대의 의미들을 갖는다. 이런 단어를 contranym이라 한다.

어원을 살펴봐도 역시 두 개의 모순되는 독일어 단어들에서 기원한 것으로 보이고 문헌에 뭐가 먼저 나왔나를 봐도 두 가지 의미들이 엇비슷한 시기에 처음 등장했다. 피곤한 단어들이다.

이렇게 까다로운 단어가 뉴스에도 나온다. 위 기사는 로나 맥대니얼이라는 사람을 nbc에서 영입하려 했다가 일이 꼬인 일을 다룬 기사다. 이런 사정을 몰라도 접속사 but가 있으니 unravel의 뜻을 가늠할 수 있다. 앞 절은 nbc가 그녀를 차지하려 빠르게 움직였다는 내용이다. 여기에서 land는 ‘차지한다’는 뜻이다. 따라서 뒤에는 부정적인 의미가 와야 할 테니 unravel은 ‘혼란스럽게 된다’는 뜻이다.
